Start with an idea

Choose a starting point. Your current project is saved before a new one opens.

Starters are self-hosted and licensed under the SIL Open Font License. Only import fonts you have permission to modify.

Your alphabet

Each letter has its own drawing. Click a letter here, choose Edit character, or use the arrows to switch. An underline marks a drawn letter.

Draw A

Choose a mode, then a tool.

Drag to draw freely with your mouse, pen or finger.

Cap height · x-height · baseline · descender. The vertical line marks the letter’s advance width. Use Pen for freehand strokes, Straight line for a segment, or Spline and Angled connector for paths through points. Mouse selects and reshapes existing paths. Draw and Erase both work with every drawing tool.

Write it on paper

Print a template, fill the cells with a dark pen, then import the completed pages. The template and its layout are saved with this project.

Separate ligatures with spaces (for example: fi fl th). All other characters are individual cells. Keep all four corner markers in your scan.

Give it a test run

Fine-tune a letter pair

No custom pairs.

Install your downloaded font in your operating system, then select it in an app. Enable OpenType contextual alternates and ligatures for those features. Blank characters are omitted; spaces are included automatically.

Pick up where you left off

The five most recently edited fonts stay in this browser. No account or cloud upload. Download a backup to move a font to another device or keep it safe when browser data is cleared.

From first letter to finished font

    1. Start with a blank guided alphabet, one of three open-source fonts, or your own TTF/OTF file.
    2. Draw freehand, join straight segments, or place spline points. Switch letters using the alphabet or Edit character menu. Or download a printable template, fill it in, and import the scanned PNG/JPG or PDF.
    3. Adjust individual letters, add variants and ligatures, and tune the spacing while testing your own text.
    4. Download an installable OTF or TTF font and a project backup. The five most recently edited projects are kept in this browser.

    Tips

    FAQ

    Is every font feature free?

Yes. Templates, editing, variants, ligatures, spacing, backups and font downloads are free. No ads, accounts, subscriptions or watermarks.

Can I use my handwriting on paper?

Yes. Download a PNG or PDF template with the characters you choose, write inside the cells, then import a scan or photo. PDF scans are supported too. Review the crop and threshold before extracting.

    Where are my fonts saved?

The five most recently edited projects are stored locally in this browser using IndexedDB. Reopen one below to keep editing. They are not uploaded or synced. Download a project backup before clearing browser data.

    What can I download?

An installable OTF or TTF font, a PNG specimen, printable PNG/PDF templates, and an editable JSON project backup. TTF conversion approximates cubic curves with quadratic curves.

    Can I draw any characters?

Add Latin, accented Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, symbols or your own Unicode characters. The studio supports up to 600 character entries and 15 variants per entry, including custom ligatures. Right-to-left shaping and complex-script layout are not provided.

    How do variants work?

Choose a default drawing for each character and add up to 15 alternatives. With contextual alternates enabled, exported fonts cycle variants based on the preceding letter. Results are contextual rather than truly random, and support depends on the app.
